In 2014, the founding members of Stonebriar’s leadership team foresaw a growing void in the equipment finance and leasing industry. Many long-standing and market leading commercial finance companies had broken up, were acquired by regulated institutions, or otherwise vacated what remained active segments of the sub-investment grade market. In 2015, with a focused strategy and committed capital, Stonebriar was formed to fill this void. So began the story of a privately held, independent, large-ticket fixed asset secured term lending and leasing company.
From the onset, Stonebriar set itself apart. While others wrote policy governing low appetite industries and asset classes, Stonebriar embraced a contrarian approach to selectively finding opportunity in these underserved segments. As many sought to contract their lease books, Stonebriar purposefully built a predominantly lease portfolio of essential- use and income producing assets. While some took comfort in making opportunities smaller, SCF looked to add value and mitigate risk by underwriting larger and broader transactions. As some platforms tailored their focus to easily liquidated commodity assets, Stonebriar defined essentiality in a much different way. And as others retrenched in the high-grade space, Stonebriar supported leveraged corporations, the turnaround stories of viable middle market companies and the growth of well-capitalized newcomers. We listened, learned, and gained understanding in an effort to uniquely add value via the extension of strategic capital.
Four years and $3.5+ billion of closed transactions later, we’ve continued to bolster our capabilities by investing in our General Equipment, Sponsor Finance, Aviation Capital, Rail Leasing and Real Estate platforms. Yet, the Stonebriar story remains in its early chapters. A vision for constant adaptation and growth sits atop certain core tenants that are immovable: align capital solutions with the client’s success, understand and structure to real versus perceived risks, communicate transparently, think creatively, execute efficiently, and create universal value.
